Christopher Timothy, the actor who originally portrayed James Herriot in the BBC's All Creatures Great and Small, has led a remarkable life after the show, including a cancer battle and roles in EastEnders and Casualty.
From Yorkshire Vet to Walford Resident
Timothy played the iconic vet from 1978 to 1990 in the original adaptation of Alf Wight's books. In 2017, he joined EastEnders as Ted Murray, alongside his on-screen wife Joyce (Maggie Steed). The couple lived in Walford Towers before being moved to a flat beneath the Taylor family. Ted developed a close bond with Bernie (Clair Norris), teaching her chess. After Joyce's death in 2018, Ted was matched with Wanda Baptiste (Anna Domingo) and eventually left the square in September 2019 to travel the world.
Continued Success on Screen
Timothy also played Brendan McGuire in Doctors from 2002 to 2024, appearing in over 900 episodes. Most recently, he portrayed Alan Gibson in Casualty. His career includes roles in Jackanory, The Bill, Lewis, and Holby City.
Health Battle and Advocacy
In 2008, Timothy was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He received the all-clear in 2013. Speaking to The Daily Star, he said: "I've had prostate cancer, but I've been clear for five years. There were only one or two people who knew." He chose not to tell his seven children initially, as the diagnosis came shortly after their mother's death. After recovery, he became an advocate for early diagnosis, encouraging other men to seek medical help.
The new series of All Creatures Great and Small is available to stream on Channel 5.
