Netflix subscribers have described the platform's newest offering as 'very disturbing' — and with justification. Devotees of the streaming service confess they've been left puzzled by the recently added 'bonkers' horror thriller. The film Cuckoo joined the platform's constantly evolving catalogue today (25 June).
What Is 'Cuckoo' About?
Initially premiered in cinemas during 2024, it was both written and directed by German filmmaker Tilman Singer. It stands as his most prominent work to date, despite its relatively modest budget of approximately $7 million. While it wasn't a blockbuster hit at the cinema, it certainly made an impact on both audiences and critics. Many were taken with its cast, which features Euphoria and The Hunger Games prequel star Hunter Schafer.
Also featured in the film is British actor and Downton Abbey and The Guest star, Dan Stevens. According to its synopsis, the narrative follows 17-year-old Gretchen, who reluctantly departs her American home to live with her father. He has recently relocated to a resort in the German Alps with his new family. Upon arrival at their future home, they are welcomed by her father's employer, who develops an inexplicable fascination with Gretchen's mute half-sister Alma.
Audience Reactions: 'Bonkers' and 'Unsettling'
Something feels amiss in this peaceful holiday haven. Gretchen is tormented by peculiar sounds and gruesome visions until she uncovers a disturbing secret that also involves her own family. The film holds a fresh rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, with both critics and audiences declaring it essential viewing for horror enthusiasts.
Amongst those left bewildered by its ending was one viewer who took to social media to share: 'The movie Cuckoo is cuckoo. It's...crazy as hell. Me and my wife looked at each at the end asking 'what is going on?'' Another concurred: 'The movie is a BONKERS creature feature with the perfect Final Girl in Hunter Schaefer. She is bound for stardom. Dan Stevens is always a delight, also. A lot of quality jump scares mixed in with constant tension and über creepiness.'
Critical Praise for Psychological Horror
A third viewer remarked: 'This movie is a wild ride from start to finish. Directed by Tilman Singer, it's a horror flick that totally messes with your head in the best way possible. One of the things I loved about Cuckoo is how it blends psychological horror with supernatural elements. It's not just about jump scares; it gets under your skin and makes you question what's real and what's not.'
While one enthusiastic viewer proclaimed: 'Cuckoo is a masterpiece. A mesmerising and unsettling film that pushes the boundaries of the horror genre. It's a must-watch for fans of psychological thrillers and those who appreciate films that offer more questions than answers. Tilman Singer has crafted a hauntingly beautiful experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.'
