Nelson letter collection could fetch £6m at auction

A collection of more than 400 letters and documents from Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson could fetch up to £6 million at auction. The lot, assembled over 40 years by entrepreneur Clive Richards, went on display at Sotheby's on Wednesday to mark Trafalgar Day, the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Collection highlights Nelson's life and career

The collection comprises 415 letters, documents and manuscripts related to Nelson, who is famous for his victories against the French during the Napoleonic Wars. It includes letters Nelson sent to his lover, Emma Hamilton, his own accounts of battle victories, and his writings about learning to write with his left hand after losing his right arm in battle.

Described as "the greatest collection of its kind in private hands", the lot is estimated to sell for between £4 and £6 million. Proceeds will go to the Clive Richards Foundation, which supports education, healthcare, heritage and arts.

Expert and historian praise the archive

Sotheby's book and manuscript specialist Gabriel Heaton told the Press Association: "This is the greatest collection of its kind in private hands, full-stop. We're really privileged to be presenting here the Clive Richards collection of letters and documents relating to Admiral Nelson, one of the towering figures of British history."

Heaton added that the collection covers "every aspect of Nelson's life and career, and of those closest to him, and those who served alongside him". He noted that selling an entire collection is a "truly unique opportunity".

The Rest Is History co-host Dominic Sandbrook said: "For anybody interested in Nelson, the Royal Navy, the Napoleonic Wars or British history generally, this is an extraordinarily rich and exciting collection." He described some documents, such as Nelson's handwritten reports on the battles of the Nile and Copenhagen, as ranking "alongside the most sacred texts of our national history".

Papers cover key battles and personal letters

At the core of the collection is The Nelson Papers, an archive that includes 168 autograph letters by Nelson. These span defining moments of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, including letters relating to Bastia, Cape St Vincent, the Nile, Copenhagen and Trafalgar.

The archive also records the personal cost of Nelson's wartime service, with letters written after he lost sight in one eye and following the amputation of his right arm. The lot includes 24 letters to Hamilton, offering insight into their love affair, which was conducted openly despite both being married. In one letter dated January 1800, Nelson recounts a dream he had about Hamilton and his desire to see her again.

The lot also features the Hamilton Papers, which includes 73 letters written by Hamilton herself, as well as the Nelson Family papers tracing the wider history of the family. Nelson died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 at the age of 47. Bidding opened on Wednesday and will run until November 18.
