His family, via film production company Liquid Action Films, confirmed his death in an emotional statement. The statement read: “RIP Dave Abbott. It is with a heavy heart that we, Dave’s family, share the tragic news of his sudden passing on 15/10/2026 due to cardiac arrest. Dave’s beautiful spirit and incredible legacy will live on in our collective memories.”

“We apologise for the delay in sharing this here; we have only recently been able to access this account. To everyone who enriched his life, shared your own zest for living, and provided him with endless inspiration: thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Tributes from fans and colleagues

Fans paid tribute online, with one writing: “I have no words. I can't believe this has happened. Dave and I would chat nonsense all the time on Insta and we always had a plan for some new pitches. I’m lucky I got to know him and work with him. I can't believe he's gone. Sending all my love to his family.”

Another wrote: “RIP Dave and my condolences to his whole family.” A third added: “Dave was a wonderful human, and lovely to work with. He kept everyone safe. I can't believe he has passed. I was planning to see him this summer. I can't imagine how you all must feel. RIP Dave.”

Widow remembers a life of adventure

Dave’s widow Melissa wrote in her own statement: “My beloved husband, father, son, big brother and dear friend…. LEGEND! Our cherished Dave passed away suddenly on Thursday.”

“Dave was an intensely private and humble person, not one for a big fuss or to blow his own trumpet. Out of respect for him, we will be having a small family cremation and then invite everyone to a gathering out at the Tutukaka Coast to celebrate his amazingly and awe-inspiring life looking over the ocean which he loved so much…”

“Dave was the strongest, fittest 62-year-old you could ever imagine… from the very beginning until his last, he lived his life to the absolute and utter fullest… it was a life of adventure, (and at times danger!), beauty, love and hard work. He was for all of us without exception- an inspiration.”

“He was at the peak of his life… he had so many more adventures planned… none of it makes sense - to be taken from us now seems just too hard to bear. However, we feel so incredibly blessed to have been granted the time we did have with this legend of a man.”
