Roger Hawes and Janey Smith are engaged, three years after finding fame and love on the first series of Davina McCall's ITV dating show My Mum Your Dad. The couple announced the news on Instagram on Friday, July 17, 2026.
Proposal Details
Roger popped the question just before the weekend. Alongside a photo of Janey showing off her ring, Roger wrote: "dreams do come true … x". Another image showed Roger's dog wearing a collar with an engraved message: "Will you marry my daddy?"
Background on the Couple
Roger became a widower after losing his first wife, and his daughter Jess submitted his application for the show, which was axed in early 2025. Janey appeared on the show with her son Will. The happy news comes weeks after Janey was rushed to hospital due to a burst appendix, requiring surgery and a week-long stay.
Their Love Story
The pair made a joint appearance on Loose Women in 2024, where Roger said: "It didn't show on the show itself but she just came in and I obviously liked what I saw straight away." Janey added: "We just hit it off; she just said randomly, 'What am I like?' and I said, 'I know what you're like!' And everybody else was just looking at us and we were just off in our own little world!"
Janey's Emotional Journey
Janey admitted how emotional it was to see their story on screen. She recalled her father's advice: "We like Roger, don't push him away." During a live TV appearance, she addressed her personal issues, saying: "I felt for the first time in my life, 'Well done Janey, you've just gone and said it on live TV.'" She also noted that she never worried Roger would leave her, despite her son's concerns about Roger's readiness after his wife's death.
