A pregnant woman has turned to the internet for advice after her parents strongly disapproved of her chosen baby name, Cecil Tenebris. The mum, who shared her story on Reddit, said she and her partner spent four months searching for a name that wouldn't easily be shortened or replaced by a nickname.
The Name Choice and Parental Backlash
Speaking on Reddit, the mum explained: 'We have spent a long time (4 months) trying to find a name for our boy that we like. We settled on 'Cecil' after much back and forth because we wanted him to have a name that isn't likely to be shortened or replaced by a nickname, and we really liked how it sounds. For a second name we decided to go for something somewhat out of the ordinary and picked 'Tenebris', a Latin word that sounds interesting and unique.'
She added that the second name gives her son the choice to use it or not later in life. However, her parents have been trying to change her mind, calling both names 'bad and inappropriate' and claiming that 'Cecil is not a name for a boy and Tenebris should not be allowed because it is not really a name.' This has caused significant stress for the expectant mother.
Online Reactions: Dark Fantasy Character Comparisons
Seeking opinions online, the mum asked: 'I would love some opinions on the names. Are they that bad? By now I'm getting a bit insecure about this whole thing.' Reddit users were quick to respond, with many criticizing the combination. One user commented: 'Some of you need to remember that you are naming a real child, not a dark romantasy character. Cecil is fine, but Tenebris?' Another added: 'I mean, Cecil is a fine, established name. I'm afraid I agree with them on Tenebris.'
A third user pointed out the grammatical oddity: 'Not only is it not a name, it's the plural dative and ablative form of the Latin word, which is just strange to me.' They also noted that a quick Google search shows Tenebris is the name of multiple works of fiction about evil things or characters, asking: 'Do you really want to give that legacy to your child?'
The Meaning Behind Cecil Tenebris
The name Cecil generally means 'blind' or 'dim-sighted' in Latin, deriving from the ancient Roman family name Caecilius. In Wales, the name derives from Seisyllt, which is thought to stem from the Latin sextus (sixth). When combined with Tenebris, the name roughly translates to 'Blind Darkness' or 'Dim-sighted Shadow,' a striking and potentially ominous combination that has fueled the controversy.
