Mum Defends Baby Name Damian Amid 'Evil' Claims

A pregnant woman is standing firm on her chosen baby name for her son, despite the overwhelming reaction it seems to provoke from those around her. Picking a name for a newborn is no small matter – you are not only naming an adorable, innocent baby but also a future grown-up.

Whether we care to admit it or not, our name influences how others perceive us and can even trigger snap judgements. Many parents spend considerable time deliberating over what to call their child, eager to land on something that will suit them throughout every stage of their life. One pregnant mum believes she has found the ideal baby name choice with her favourite option, Damian – yet everybody in her life seems to hate it.

In a bid to understand why the name appears to be causing such a stir, the mum-to-be turned to Reddit and wrote: 'First time mum and I am having a boy. We decided on Damian but everyone I tell this to absolutely hates it. I am not going to change it, me and my husband both like it, but I just do not understand why literally everyone hates it.'

Fellow Reddit users rushed to the comments section to share their views, with many arriving at the same conclusion. One user simply said: 'The Omen film series. Damian is the son of the devil, the anti-Christ.' Responding to this, another user added: 'This. Damian will always be associated with this for me. Damon is close but loses the devil connection.'

A third echoed this sentiment: 'I think people associate it with the devil,' prompting the expectant mother to respond: 'One of them did say that and I was like what.'

Another shared: 'It is 100 percent the Omen movies. I hear Damian and I automatically think of those movies and I have never even seen them. But it is a good name otherwise! Kids always make their names their own.'

Someone else, questioning why other names from well-known horror films remain widely used, said: 'It is weird that Damien is ruined but there are still Jasons, Michaels and Freddys. Heck I even know a Regan. Also in Rosemary's Baby, that baby was Adrian.'

Another person, who had also contemplated the name for their own child, revealed: 'My wife and I spoke about it as an option for our firstborn, but wrote it off exactly because of The Omen films. Damian is the son in the films and is the son of the devil. He is the anti-Christ. It is an older film, but seen by many and Damian equals devil is a common connection to make. Since The Omen, Damian or Damien has been used as a name for dark or demon coded characters in a lot of media.'
