Michael Douglas has issued a health update on Hollywood veteran Jack Nicholson after it was rumoured he could return to acting – and it’s bad news.
Filmmaker James L Brooks teased in 2025 that Nicholson, 89, “has gotten scripts, he’s reading them, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing them”, but according to his close friend Michael, that will not happen, and the “show is over” for Jack.
Douglas on Nicholson's retirement
In a new interview, Michael, 82, admitted: “I would have liked to have acted with Jack. He’s not working anymore. He’s well. He has disappeared. I know that.”
He added during a speech at the Swansea Building Society Arena in Wales, while promoting his new memoir One Helluva Ride: “I still see him, but he is fine. He is up there by his house and walking around in his slippers. It happens. He deserves it. I understand. He is a few years older than me but I understand.”
Last film and rare appearance
Jack last starred in a movie back in 2010, appearing as Charles in How Do You Know.
The Shining star Jack turned 89 in April this year, and appeared in a rare photo with his close friend Joni Mitchell. The picture was shared by Jack’s daughter Lorraine, and “recluse” Jack was seen clapping his hands together as he appeared with grey hair and a short beard.
Health and lifestyle concerns
Sources previously claimed he was “a little wobbly” and “didn’t like to be seen in public”.
A source told the New York Post: “Part of his appeal in the past was his extravagant character and lifestyle. But that all catches up with you after a while. I think Jack and his inner circle prefer that you remember him as he was.”
Another added to Closer magazine: “Jack has been slowing down a lot in recent years and has become somewhat of a recluse. There was a lot of concern for him because of it and even though he played it down and told people he was just fine, he’s definitely had some pretty serious health struggles.”
He currently lives in a $5million mansion on Mulholland Drive in Beverly Hills, with his children reportedly in charge of caring for him.
