Melania Trump has offered a rare glimpse into the private childhood of her son Barron, highlighting his close relationship with his late grandmother, Amalija Knavs, who died in January 2024. In an interview with USA Today, the former first lady described their bond as 'magical,' noting that Amalija was like a second mother to Barron during his White House years.
'My mother was the epitome of love and warmth, and for Barron, a grandmother who filled every moment with joy and wisdom,' Melania said. She added that Amalija often spoke Slovenian with Barron, strengthening his connection to his heritage through books, stories, and traditional dishes. 'Her delicious meals were more than just food; they were a celebration of togetherness,' Melania recalled.
Melania, who was born in Slovenia and became a US citizen in 2006, brought her parents to the US as Donald Trump's political career advanced. They became citizens in 2018. Amalija's death at age 78 was a significant loss for the family, with Donald Trump paying tribute at a January 2024 Iowa caucus, joking that Barron's 6-foot-7 height came from eating her cooking.
Barron, now a student at NYU's Stern School of Business, generally maintains a low profile. However, he reportedly helped his father's 2024 presidential campaign by connecting him with popular podcasters and social media influencers to attract younger voters. Melania also shared parenting advice, urging mothers to 'shower your children with love and support' and to 'see them as their own unique individuals.'
