Mel C Reveals Surprise Wedding and Candlelit Proposal

Spice Girl Mel C has broken her silence about her surprise wedding to Chris Dingwall, describing the emotional proposal and her journey to tying the knot. In an interview with Vogue, the singer revealed details of their intimate ceremony in Cumbria over the weekend, attended by fellow Spice Girls Emma Bunton, Mel B, and Geri Horner.

Romantic Proposal in Mallorca

Mel C, 52, told Vogue that Chris proposed during a holiday in Mallorca last July. After a lavish meal, the couple returned to their hotel suite “a bit drunk and a bit full,” where she found the room filled with candles. “It was beautiful, just the two of us,” she said. “He couldn’t believe I was surprised but I was floored.”

The singer admitted she never expected to marry, saying: “I wasn’t a girl who grew up dreaming about her dress. I was always just focused on my career – I think even relationships took a backseat for me because I’ve been so driven to do what I love, which is performing.” She added: “I’d gotten to the point in my life where I just didn’t think it was going to be a part of my story.”

Chris Dingwall: A Calming Presence

Mel described Chris as having a “very calming energy” and called him a “beautiful addition to mine and my daughter’s life.” She explained: “Because, you know, I’m a single mum. My daughter is 17, and we’re pretty resilient the two of us, we’re a team. For anybody coming into our world… it was going to be tough, and he just fits perfectly. It’s a beautiful dynamic.”

Mel’s daughter Scarlett, 17, is from her previous relationship with property developer Thomas Starr, which ended in 2012. She also had a seven-year relationship with former manager Joe Marshall, which ended in 2022.

Two Weddings and a Dress from Victoria Beckham

Mel revealed that the weekend ceremony was actually their second wedding. They had a legal ceremony in Chris’s native Australia before the UK service. For both events, bandmate Victoria Beckham designed her dress. Victoria told Vogue: “She very casually told me she was leaving for Australia in two days and getting married. When I asked what she was wearing, she mentioned she had actually ordered one of my dresses but that it didn’t quite fit, and she didn’t have time to get it altered before leaving. I happened to have that exact dress in my own wardrobe and offered to lend it to her.”

Last Spice Girl to Wed

Mel C was the last Spice Girl to get married. Geri Horner married Christian Horner in 2015, Emma Bunton wed Jade Jones in 2021, Mel B tied the knot with Rory McPhee last year, and Victoria Beckham married David Beckham in 1999.
