A resurfaced clip from 2017 shows legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks hilariously baffled by the chaotic format of BBC's The One Show, as he turned 100 this week. The EGOT winner, whose career spans seven decades, appeared on the show to promote a musical adaptation of his film Young Frankenstein.
Brooks' Reaction to The One Show's Tonal Shifts
During the episode hosted by Alex Jones and Matt Baker, Brooks was joined by Russell Crowe, Lesley Joseph, and comedian Ross Noble. The conversation turned to a segment about Patricia, a woman who had contacted the show about her long-lost father. Before Matt could explain further, Brooks blurted out: 'What a crazy show,' sparking laughter across the studio.
Alex responded with an agreeable 'I know,' while Matt gestured to represent the show's rollercoaster nature. Russell Crowe stepped in to explain the format, saying: 'This is kind of like the sponsors break where they have to do something serious and they'll be back to the frivolity of us shortly.' Matt added: 'It's serious, we just turn the page and move on.'
Brooks got the last word, however, stating: 'Okay, but this is nuts, I want you to know,' as more laughter erupted.
Fans Celebrate the Moment
Nearly a decade later, fans are still enjoying the moment. Dr. Ellen Walker joked on X: 'Imagine being Patricia, you find your long-lost father, then you get Mel Brooks turning it into a gag on The One Show. She must have been having the BEST week.' Rob Power added: 'You could watch this five thousand times and the timing would still crack you up.'
The clip has resurfaced as Brooks celebrates his 100th birthday, with fans reminiscing about his iconic career and memorable television appearances.
