Meghan Markle has been ridiculed by fans after appearing in a new promotional video wearing a necklace worth £42,230 (around $56,000). The Duchess of Sussex, 45, released the footage to unveil "chapter two" of the Holiday Collection for her lifestyle brand, As Ever.
In the video, Meghan looks into the camera with a "no makeup" look, giggling and touching her hair while setting up a festive table. The centrepiece of the backlash, however, was the Maison Verde Necklace, crafted from yellow gold, set with diamonds and featuring an 11-carat cabochon Zambian emerald.
Social media backlash over jewellery choice
Critics took to X to mock the Duchess's display. One user questioned whether the necklace was borrowed for the shoot, writing: "Is she tired? [...] Or is that her attempt at come-hither? That necklace is almost $56k though—I would put money on it being a loan for the photo shoot."
The same critic added: "It’s also the only way she’s going to wear an 11 carat cabochon emerald since she didn’t get the tiara she wanted." Another asked: "What jeweller would loan her a necklace like that?"
Reaction to styling and recent promotions
Others criticised her styling, with one commenter noting: "The no makeup look is not her best look." A fourth user simply wrote: "She's insufferable."
The backlash follows a similar response days earlier, when Meghan was branded "self-absorbed" over the same video, in which she lit a £73 "Signature Two-Wick Holiday Candle" and poured champagne to promote the brand's festive range.
