Matty Barton star Ash Palmisciano: partner, transition and loss

Emmerdale actor Ash Palmisciano, known for playing Matty Barton, has discussed his personal life, including his real-life transition, the abuse he encounters, and his relationship with his girlfriend.

Career and historic casting

Palmisciano joined the ITV soap in 2018 as Matty, the child of Moira, played by Natalie J. Robb. He has been central to major storylines, from a prison sentence to his wedding to Amy, portrayed by Natalie Ann Jamieson, who died last year.

He made history as the first transgender character on Emmerdale. Initially brought in to advise soap executives on the character through the charity All About Trans, he was invited to audition after they discovered he was a performer.

Transition and abuse

The 36-year-old has spoken about his own transition, telling The Mirror it contrasted with Matty's. While Matty transitioned in isolation, Palmisciano had family support. He said: "My life is unlike Matty's. I had family around me from the start, so it is definitely different."

In 2024, he spoke about abuse he endures because of his identity, but noted the support from Emmerdale fans. He told The Mirror: "I've experienced trolling. I've heard horrific language and had disturbing threats." He also recalled an incident where a man told him: "No matter how hard you try, you'll never be a man."

Family tragedy and relationship

Palmisciano suffered a personal loss in 2022 when his mother died at 60 due to reported complications from long-term rheumatoid arthritis. He told The Mirror: "Mum was the most important person in my life."

He is in a relationship with girlfriend Shea Rowan, who he praised for her support. He told OK! in 2024: "She's really proud, and I'm very lucky to have her." He joked that Shea was annoyed he got married in the show, adding: "We're good mates with Natalie [Ann Jamieson] and her partner too."

Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
