Matt Willis reveals 'very valid reason' for Strictly refusal

Matt Willis has revealed the 'very valid reason' he has for turning down competing on Strictly Come Dancing after his wife Emma landed a presenting role on the BBC series.

Busted singer Matt and TV presenter Emma have been in a relationship together since 2004. They tied the knot in 2015 in a stately home Rushton Hall located in Northamptonshire. Together, they share three children: 17-year-old Isabelle, Ace, 14, and ten-year-old Trixie. Known as one of the UK's most famous couples, they present Love Is Blind UK on Netflix together, where they try to help singletons find love in a unique way.

Strictly presenting debut

Last month saw Emma, 50, make her Strictly presenting debut alongside Johannes Radebe and Josh Widdicombe. The trio were tasked with replacing long-time hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.

According to Matt, 43, he has been approached to appear on the BBC series several times over the years. However, he now believes that since his wife is associated with it he has a good reason not to take part.

He told The Telegraph: "Now I have a very valid reason to turn it down. I can't think of anything worse. It'd be like the first night in the theatre, but every week."

Proud of Emma

According to Matt, his wife was 'really happy and excited' to take on the role which the likes of Rylan Clark and Janette Manrara were also up for.

Describing the job as a 'curveball', Matt explained: "She's really happy, really excited. It felt different, this job, because she really wanted it, and I think she was scared to say that out loud.

"Taking the biggest job on TV was not on our bingo card for 2026, but I'm so proud of her. And if anyone can do it, it's her. I'm stoked for her, she's perfect for it, and loves the show so much."

Asked if they auditioned for Strictly together, he said: "No, no. We do Love Is Blind, that's about as far as my TV presenting goes. It's not my bag."

Meanwhile, Matt noted that he 'doesn't know where I would have ended up' had he not met Emma. Matt has spoken publicly over the years about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction.

"If I didn't have her, I don't know who I would have had to drag me out of it. When you hit rock bottom, eventually you want to turn your life around.

"But having someone that loved me was massive. Knowing I had her was enough for me to go, 'OK, maybe I'm worth doing this for'," he said.

Matt went on to credit Emma for 'dragging him out of it' after hitting 'rock bottom'. While they were 'dramatically different people to when we first met', Matt said they had 'luckily fallen in love with these new versions of ourselves'.
