Matt Baker shares 'code word' trick to avoid on-camera rows

Matt Baker has revealed how he and his wife Nicola Mooney avoid arguments while filming, admitting they rely on an unspoken approach rather than a formal code word. Appearing on Sara Cox's BBC Radio 2 programme, the 48-year-old Countryfile presenter was asked whether having cameras "constantly in his home" proved stressful.

Matt, who married Nicola in 2004 and shares two children, Luke and Molly, with her, explained that the reality is less daunting than it might seem because of the creative control he holds over production. He said: "Erm, well they're all my friends. Do you know what I mean? I'm sort of filming it, it's my production company that's making it. I mean it's great and people love it and the third episode is on More4 tomorrow (Tuesday) night."

Keeping the peace on camera

When Sara asked whether Matt and Nicola use signals when they want a moment of privacy, specifically a "code word for when you don't want to argue in front of the cameras," Matt confessed: "Well, yeah. I suppose we do actually. Yeah I just shut up and don't say anything."

Sara responded with casual praise while acknowledging Matt's latest release: "Good lad, good lad. Congratulations on your new book. A memoir told through the 20 dogs you've had so far that you've shared your life with."

A strong partnership

Matt and Nicola both appear on Our Barn in the Dales together, and this is not the first time Matt has spoken publicly about their marriage. The couple met while Matt was performing in the disco show at Pier 39 in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire.

In a previous interview with Yours Magazine, Matt described Nicola as not only his "best friend" but also an exceptionally effective partner, expressing gratitude for her help managing challenges linked to his dyslexia and ADHD. He said: "We grew up together and we've had a crazy life experiencing everything together, including all the stuff I've done like The One Show and Blue Peter. We are the best of friends and I couldn't do it without her. Not just from the support perspective – I'm dyslexic and she's great with words that I struggle with – but we know what makes each other tick."

He added: "We know who needs support when, and the best way to help each other out. That is all you can want in a happy relationship – someone who is there for you and has your back. We have a great partnership."

Back on screen

Matt Baker returns to screens tonight (Tuesday, October 27) with Matt Baker: Our Barn in the Dales on More4 at 9pm.
