Margot Robbie's 'Too Aussie' Accent Revealed in Nostalgic Neighbours Clip
Margot Robbie recently disclosed that her natural Australian accent was considered "too Aussie" even for the iconic Australian soap opera, Neighbours. Now, Prime Video has unveiled a video showcasing exactly how the Queensland-born actress sounded before she refined her distinctive local twang with the help of a dialect coach.
Prime Video Shares Nostalgic TikTok Clip
In a video shared to TikTok this week, Margot Robbie, who portrayed Donna Freedman on the long-running series, can be heard delivering her lines in a broad, unmistakable Australian accent. The clip features Robbie wearing a bridesmaid's dress as she exclaims, "Everyone's already left!" Her thick Australian inflections are particularly evident when she adds, "Are you kidding me?" and laments that her taxi will take "an hour."
Fans in the comments section were quick to poke fun at Robbie's pronunciation. One person joked, "An ouwwwher? (An hour)," while another remarked, "To think this was AFTER a dialogue coach." Additional comments included, "The way she says 'I am' kills me and I'm Australian," and "OH NAUUURRRRR!" highlighting the nostalgic and humorous reaction to the actress's authentic accent.
Dialect Coach Hired to Tone Down Accent
The Barbie actress revealed last week that producers asked her to tone down her ocker twang when she won the role of Donna Freedman on Neighbours back in 2008. In a recent chat with Graham Norton, Robbie explained, "I haven't done really an Aussie accent since I was on Neighbours. This isn't as Queensland. My accent used to be so strong."
She continued, "They got a dialect coach for me because I was too Australian for Neighbours. I was like, I couldn't hear that I had a bad accent, so I was like, 'what do ya mean'." The 35-year-old actress joked while demonstrating her natural accent, emphasizing how she worked with the coach to round out her speech after producers told her, "you're just awful to listen to."
Robbie's Rise from Australian Television to Hollywood
Prior to making the successful jump to Hollywood, Margot Robbie's profile grew considerably thanks to her work on Australian television, particularly on Neighbours, which concluded in 2025 after an impressive 40-year run. Robbie's initial tenure on the series spanned from 2008 through 2011, during which she appeared in more than 350 episodes.
In addition to Neighbours, she had guest spots on Australian shows such as City Homicide and Review With Myles Barlow in 2008. However, since her breakthrough in 2013, Robbie has primarily focused on film acting, starring in major productions like Barbie and her latest project, a new adaptation of Emily Brontë's iconic novel Wuthering Heights.
This revelation and the shared clip offer a fascinating glimpse into the early career of one of Hollywood's most prominent actresses, showcasing the authentic roots she had to modify for her role on a quintessentially Australian show.
