Lucy Ward Thanks Partner for Saving Her Mother's Life

ITV co-commentator Lucy Ward has publicly thanked her partner, former footballer Neil Redfearn, after he saved her mother's life while she was away covering the 2026 World Cup in North America. The 52-year-old pundit, a well-known figure in women's football, has been working across Mexico, Canada, and the United States for the tournament.

Redfearn's Heroic Intervention

According to a social media post from Ward, Redfearn was on hand to save her mother's life last Friday when her condition suddenly deteriorated. The exact nature of the medical emergency has not been disclosed, but Redfearn, a former Premier League striker who spent much of his career at Barnsley, acted swiftly.

Taking to her Instagram Stories, Ward wrote: "This one saved my Mum's life on Friday whilst I was away at the World Cup. What a man, forever grateful for you." She shared the post on Tuesday evening ahead of the Mexico versus Ecuador round of 32 match, which she covered for ITV alongside lead commentator Joe Speight at the Azteca Stadium.

Mother's Recovery Confirmed

In a later update, Ward confirmed that her mother had been discharged from hospital. She wrote: "Mum is fine and back home from the hospital. All good," before adding: "Sometimes life comes at you fast. What a man."

Ward's Broadcasting Career

Ward is among a number of female pundits who regularly feature in men's football coverage. Her commentary and analysis have earned widespread acclaim, and she was recognised as one of the leading broadcasters by The Guardian in 2024/25 for her contributions. She was once targeted by Joey Barton, who narrowly avoided jail for harassing her and other female pundits on X.com (formerly Twitter).

She currently works with ITV and TNT Sports, and her career has seen her appear across Sky, BBC, and Amazon Prime, covering the Premier League, Champions League, and numerous other competitions. She continues to be an influential figure in women's football.

Redfearn's Playing and Coaching Career

Neil Redfearn amassed over 800 appearances during his professional playing career, which stretched from 1982 to 2006. He played for Bolton, Lincoln, Doncaster, Crystal Palace, Watford, Oldham, Barnsley, Charlton, Bradford, Wigan, Halifax, Boston, and Rochdale among other lower-league clubs. He concluded his distinguished English football career at non-league side Scarborough.

Having transitioned into management, he served as caretaker and head coach at Leeds United on four separate occasions between 2012 and 2015, before a short spell at Rotherham United. Redfearn also ventured into women's football, taking charge of Doncaster Belles, Liverpool Women, and Sheffield United Women between 2020 and 2022. His most recent position saw him return to the men's game with Farsley Celtic, who were wound up in 2025 and now continue as phoenix club FC Farsley.

Personal and Legal History

Ward and Redfearn's paths crossed during their time together at Leeds, with Ward stepping into the role of head of education and welfare at the Premier League club following her retirement from the game. She worked alongside the likes of James Milner, Aaron Lennon, Fabian Delph, and Kalvin Phillips during their academy years.

In 2023, she alleged that she had been pushed out of that position as a direct consequence of Redfearn's dismissal as manager and their romantic involvement. Ward went on to win a sex discrimination case against then-owner Massimo Cellino, receiving £290,000 in compensation.
