Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon has spoken out about her latest storyline, admitting her 'worry' as it was confirmed that Bethany Platt is pregnant with her mum's ex's baby.
The Blackpool-born actress has starred in the ITV soap, filmed in Salford, on and off since 2015. Her character Bethany has been at the centre of dramatic storylines revolving around issues such as grooming, bullying and her mental health.
Pregnancy reveal shocks viewers
Now, Lucy is back at the forefront of another big storyline. During Tuesday's (October 13) episode of Corrie, it was revealed that Bethany is pregnant, after recently sleeping with DC Kit Green, the ex-partner of her mother, Sarah Platt.
The controversial one-night stand took place last month, after Sarah had dumped Kit in a bid to spare him from the ordeal, as he faced losing his career for her, and she faces the rest of her life behind bars for the murder of Theo Silverton.
Actress shares her reaction
Sharing her reaction to the twist, Lucy said: "My jaw was on the floor. I think it’s so good that now they have got to face the consequences of what they’ve done and they can’t just brush it under the carpet in the way that they wanted to. It’s adding a whole other level of drama for the audience."
She said that her character’s tryst with Kit "just happened", adding: "I don’t actually know what she was thinking. I think they both were in quite a bad place at the time."
Kit's hidden health battle
In the aftermath of the split, Kit was seen drinking more and pushing away those who care about him. But what they didn't know at the time was that, as well as losing Sarah, he had also been shaken by an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis in another hard-hitting health storyline for the long-running show.
It was during the time he was keeping his diagnosis a secret that Kit ended up sleeping with Bethany. In the scenes aired in September, Corrie viewers were initially left to wonder with whom Kit had a romantic encounter, after he was seen at No.8 on a date with Jodie Ramsey, which saw her older sister, and Kit’s former fling, Shona Platt, gatecrash.
As the episodes ended, Kit was seen back at the flat alone, emerging from his bedroom where a wine glass sat abandoned with lipstick marks on it. He was seen stopping the music on a record player before moving to the sofa, hinting at a romantic encounter, before the follow-up episode revealed the woman's identity as Bethany.
Worries over fan reaction
Asked if she's worried this will lead people to hate Bethany, Lucy admitted: "Yeah, a little bit. I think they're going to be annoyed at her and think that she's just really stupid, which she is for what she's done. But there was two people involved here so I’m hoping she doesn’t get all the blame."
But she has expressed her excitement for the drama to come, adding: "I think any scenes with the Platt family are always the best. I feel like the future drama that could happen now with everyone is exciting. There’s so many ways this could go, if and when it all comes out. It’s going to be so good and really fun to play."
