Love Island's First Married Couple Weigh Major Family Relocation to Spain
Olivia and Alex Bowen, who made history as the inaugural Love Island couple to marry, are contemplating their most significant lifestyle shift to date. The pair, parents to three-year-old Abel and six-month-old Sienna, are seriously evaluating a move from the United Kingdom to the sun-drenched shores of Spain, driven by a desire to offer their children an alternative upbringing.
Dreaming of Sunshine and Outdoor Freedom
"We've been thinking about it for a long time," Olivia, 31, discloses. "Initially, it wasn't specifically Spain, but the concept of moving abroad in general. A part of us genuinely yearns to reside in constant sunshine. Abel possesses boundless energy and adores being outside, so I would absolutely love for him to experience a childhood where he can be outdoors perpetually, with the beach just a stone's throw away."
The devoted mother further elaborated on the educational benefits she envisions. "I would be thrilled for him, and eventually the baby, to have the chance to become bilingual. I firmly believe it's an extraordinary gift to bestow upon your child."
Navigating Practicalities and Family Ties
Despite these sun-soaked aspirations, Olivia acknowledges that any international relocation will not occur imminently, particularly given their close-knit family connections in Britain. "There's a considerable journey ahead involving scrutinising schools and all related logistics," she explains. "It's far from a hasty decision, and I'm not entirely convinced the grandparents are overly enthusiastic about the prospect!" Olivia remarked with a laugh.
"However, we have an entire year to thoroughly research and examine educational options. Ultimately, if we do decide to move, it will predominantly be a choice made for the benefit of our children."
Finding Balance as a Family of Four
Olivia suggests that the present moment might be ideal for such contemplation, as having two children has helped the couple establish their perfect dynamic. "For Alex and me, I genuinely feel we've discovered our equilibrium with two," she notes. "It seems more evenly distributed now. Because there are two of them, it almost creates a more level playing field. We are tremendously supportive of one another."
Alex, 34, concedes that the transition from one child to two presented initial hurdles. "Being an only child, I think I retain a hint of that inherent selfishness," he admits. "When Abel arrived, you essentially surrender your personal time for him, which is wonderful. Then, when he began nursery, you reclaim a portion of that time. With Sienna's arrival, you're repeating the entire process, but now with two children simultaneously! It can be overwhelming, but you simply learn on the job and take each day as it comes."
Overcoming Challenges and Cherishing Moments
Reflecting on the demands of parenting two young children, Olivia adds, "Occasionally, it's difficult to remain fully present because it's intensely demanding—you're attempting to engage with two children who have utterly disparate interests and are at completely different developmental stages."
Nevertheless, this experience has also heightened the couple's awareness of time's rapid passage. "With Sienna, it has elapsed in the blink of an eye," Olivia observes. "It truly makes you appreciate how precious they are and how vital it is to cherish every single moment. It has taught me not to squander any time and to be far more present in the now."
A Journey Marked by Resilience
While Olivia and Alex are now comfortably settled as a family unit, their path to this point has been emotionally taxing. After tragically losing Sienna's twin early in the pregnancy due to vanishing twin syndrome, Olivia also endured a traumatic birth, which she has characterised as "the most frightening moment of her life."
She previously recounted, "I was lying on the operating table completely unaware of what was transpiring. I remember Sienna being delivered, and she was perfectly fine and crying, which is precisely what you hope to hear. Then everything fell silent."
Olivia continued, "I heard a siren and the words 'severe haemorrhage.'" She ultimately lost 2.8 litres of blood, noting that three litres can be fatal. Thankfully, both Olivia and Sienna are now in robust health, with the couple documenting their evolution into a family of four on their ITV2 reality series, Olivia & Alex: Parenthood.
Parenting in the Public Eye and Embracing Imperfection
While the couple welcomes documentary crews into their lives, Olivia acknowledges that parenting under public scrutiny carries its own pressures, especially concerning contentious issues like screen time. Social media expectations have occasionally led her to doubt herself. "I have undoubtedly felt guilty about screen time, but that stems solely from online commentary," she states. "You're pressured into embodying this 'perfect parent' ideal, yet the reality is we're all essentially improvising because we've never undertaken this role before."
Alex concurs that technology can be advantageous when utilised judiciously. "Screen time certainly has its place. If you're on an aeroplane or dining at a restaurant and the children are restless, sometimes it's necessary. I believe it's more about the content they're consuming. Programs like Bluey, Hey Duggee, and Numberblocks can actually be quite educational."
Olivia concludes with a smile, "You know, I think because we support each other so effectively at home, we're incredibly solid. We aren't actively seeking external validation from others to reassure us that we're competent parents. That's the fundamental key!"
