Lauren Laverne returns to The One Show after health revelation
Lauren Laverne back on The One Show after health news

Lauren Laverne returned to The One Show on Tuesday (August 4), telling viewers it was "so lovely to be back" as she presented alongside Alex Jones.

The BBC programme had been off air for its summer break until late July. During the break, Laverne revealed on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with smouldering myeloma, a condition she described as having "no cure".

Health disclosure

In her July Instagram post, Laverne wrote: "Hey, so personal news. I'm quite a private person by nature but I'm sharing this as one of the many things I've learned after going through health challenges in recent years is that talking about this stuff helps people."

She explained that smouldering myeloma is "an asymptomatic blood and bone marrow disorder that in some people can develop into blood cancer", but added: "Thankfully for me the risk of this happening in my case is pretty low."

Laverne said she currently feels OK and does not need treatment, though there is "no cure yet" and her immune system is "a bit compromised".

On-air comments

On The One Show, Laverne addressed her health after a feature about hospitals taking services into shopping centres. She told her co-host: "I mean, Al, you know, I have to do quite a lot of outpatient appointments. And actually the idea of doing them somewhere a little bit more relaxed, a little bit more, it's not quite as kind of medicalised as a hospital, that would be quite nice."

She added: "It really appeals to me."

The revelation comes two years after Laverne told fans she had received the "all clear" following treatment for an unspecified form of cancer. The One Show airs at 7pm on BBC One on weekdays.
