Laura Carmichael reveals secret wedding to Downton Abbey co-star

Downton Abbey star Laura Carmichael has publicly confirmed her marriage to fellow cast member Michael C. Fox for the first time, ending months of speculation. The actress, famed for playing Lady Edith Crawley, revealed the news during a candid interview on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour with Kirsty Wark.

From On-Set Romance to Real-Life Marriage

The couple first met in 2014 while filming the fifth series of the hit ITV period drama. Carmichael portrayed the aristocratic Lady Edith, while Fox played Andrew 'Andy' Parker, a footman who later becomes the estate's butler. Their relationship blossomed away from the cameras, leading to the birth of their son in 2021.

Fox had initially let slip about their union in September 2025 during an NBC special, Downton Abbey Celebrates The Grand Finale. However, Carmichael's radio appearance marked her first personal confirmation. When asked by Wark if she had found love on set, she replied, "I did yes. Michael Fox who plays Andy Parker, yeah he's my fella!"

Navigating Upstairs-Downstairs Dynamics

The actress addressed the amusing irony of their characters' social positions within the show contrasting with their real-life partnership. "Yeah which is very funny how hard that is for people to get their heads around," she said. "But you know we were in lots of scenes together, he's just in the background holding a tray mostly for those ones when he's at Highclere."

She shared a humorous anecdote that highlighted the production team's different treatment of the 'Lady' and the 'butler'. During a lengthy scene where Fox was holding a heavy tray of champagne glasses, he noticed his shoelace was undone and asked Carmichael to hold it momentarily. "And I must have been holding this tray a second before five different crew members came running up to me going, 'Let me take that, you don't need to hold that, Laura it's fine'," she recalled. "And we were like, he's been holding it all day."

A Private Life Forged in the Downton Family

The pair have fiercely guarded their privacy. Their son's arrival was only revealed a year after his birth, with a source telling The Sun at the time about their joy at becoming parents away from the spotlight. Carmichael credits her veteran Downton Abbey colleagues with teaching her the value of separating work and home life.

In a 2019 interview with Town & Country, she gushed about finding love within the cast, saying, "I've fallen in love and made wonderful friends – how lucky am I?" Fox has similarly expressed his gratitude to the show, stating on the NBC special, "I owe a lot to this show. I think so much of my life has been shaped around this show."

The couple made a rare public appearance together at the London premiere for the final Downton Abbey film, where Carmichael was photographed proudly displaying a ring on her left hand. After 15 years and three films, the series has not only left a cultural legacy but has also created a very personal and lasting bond for two of its stars.
