Kris Marshall returns as DI Humphrey Goodman as Beyond Paradise series 5 filming begins
Kris Marshall back as DI Humphrey Goodman for Beyond Paradise series 5

Fans of Beyond Paradise are celebrating as beloved star Kris Marshall has been spotted back on location, with production on series 5 of the hit BBC drama now officially underway in Looe, Cornwall.

Kris first made his name in the role of the lovably eccentric DI Humphrey Goodman in Death in Paradise, joining the BBC One series in 2014 as the second detective to head up the Saint Marie police team.

After three well-received series, Kris departed Death in Paradise in 2017 in an emotional farewell episode, in which Humphrey left the Caribbean island to follow his heart and pursue a relationship with Martha Lloyd, played by Sally Bretton.

Beyond Paradise series 5 production underway

Rather than drawing a line under the character, the BBC later gave Humphrey his own show. Beyond Paradise launched in February 2023, following Humphrey and Martha as they swap island life for the fictional English coastal town of Shipton Abbott — filmed on location in the picturesque Cornish town of Looe — where Humphrey takes up a post as a detective inspector.

The series has gone on to win a devoted following, with Kris widely praised for bringing warmth, wit, and his trademark awkward charm to the role.

Now, dedicated fans have confirmed that production on series 5 has commenced, posting a collection of photographs on a fan Facebook page.

Fan photos confirm filming start

In one image, a fan shared a shot of the Shipton Abbott police station, accompanied by the caption: "The police station light is back up in Looe today, this means filming is about to start."

Another enthusiast captured several snaps of the cast on location, including Kris himself. He was pictured in one shot sporting a white vest and sunglasses while chatting with a fellow cast member. In another, he was dressed as DI Humphrey Goodman, wearing a beige jacket, a blue shirt, and navy trousers, the Express reports.

The fan wrote alongside the images: "First day of filming for the new series here in Looe, aka Shipton Abbott."

Dylan Llewellyn, who portrays PC Kelby Lockhart, was also photographed in his police uniform, wheeling a bicycle.

Fans rushed to the comment section to share their delight, with one fan writing, "Brilliant news. Love the cast, love the storylines." Another commented, "This is great news. I am waiting for the new series with anticipation." While a third went on, "Can't wait for the next series."

Beyond Paradise is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
