Sky News Australia contributor Louise Roberts has suggested that King Charles had a strategic motive for reuniting with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last week, beyond a simple family gathering. On Friday, July 10, King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with their children Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, at Highgrove House, the King's private country residence in Gloucestershire.
Meeting described as a 'test of trust'
Speaking to Sky News Digital Presenter Gabriella Power, Roberts said: 'I see this whole meeting less a family reunion and more of a test as to whether Charles can actually trust his younger son again.' She added, 'I don’t think they’ll ever trust Meghan again, but I think he’s very keen to build a relationship with Harry.' The Palace had described the encounter as a 'private family occasion,' with no official photographs or video released.
Significance of Highgrove House
Roberts emphasised the choice of venue: 'The choice of Highgrove is very significant. This is Charles's private home, so it's on complete lockdown. He controls every aspect of it. The fact that he was agreeable to a meeting and didn't just dismiss Harry, Meghan and the children, he did want to see them, but it's a lot different from it happening at Buckingham Palace.' She also noted the lack of photographs, stating: 'Charles and Camilla know exactly where to stand at Highgrove so they don't get photographed by any paps.'
Prince William reportedly 'furious'
While King Charles was reportedly delighted to see his grandchildren after more than four years, the reunion reportedly angered Prince William. TalkTV host Mark Dolan said on Sky News Australia: 'It’s my understanding that William is furious about this. Why? Because it’s a reward for the treachery, the disloyalty, and the cruelty of Harry and Meghan.' Dolan added: 'Charles wants to see his grandchildren. I understand that, but I think that Harry and Meghan had no right to be on a royal property, but they got their way as usual.'
Background on the Sussexes' UK visit
The meeting marked the first time the King had seen his younger son and his family in over four years. The Sussexes have rarely visited the UK since stepping back from royal duties in 2020 and relocating to the United States. The private nature of the Highgrove gathering contrasts with previous formal royal engagements, underscoring the delicate dynamics within the family.
