Britney Spears has condemned claims made by her ex-husband Kevin Federline in his upcoming memoir, describing his depiction of her as “extremely hurtful and exhausting”. In a statement on social media, the pop star disputed allegations that she behaved erratically around their two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James.
Federline’s memoir, You Thought You Knew, details his two-year marriage to Spears and their subsequent custody battle. An excerpt published by the New York Times includes claims that Spears used cocaine while breastfeeding and once stood in her sons’ doorway holding a knife. Federline said he learned of the alleged behaviour from the boys, now aged 19 and 20.
Spears, who was under a conservatorship from 2008 to 2021, said she has rarely seen her sons in recent years. “With one son only seeing me for 45 min in the past five years and the other with only four visits in the past five years,” she wrote. “I have pride too. From now on I will let them know when I am available.”
Federline also wrote about the #FreeBritney movement, suggesting fans should now focus on a “Save Britney” movement, warning that “the clock is ticking” and “something bad is going to happen”. A spokesperson for Spears accused Federline of profiting from her, noting that child support payments had ended.
In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Spears claimed Federline tried to portray her as “completely out of control” during their custody battle. She has described her life since the conservatorship as “sacred and private”.
