Kerry Katona became emotional on Tuesday's episode of Loose Women as she discussed her tumultuous relationship with her late ex-husband, George Kay. The former Atomic Kitten singer, 41, appeared on the ITV show to promote her new book, Whole Again: Love Life and Me, but the conversation turned to her past marriage and the alleged abuse she suffered.
Katona, who married Kay in 2014 and had a daughter, Dylan-Jorge, with him, admitted she feels guilt and shame for exposing her children to the trauma. 'I think what I struggle with is that I put my kids through it,' she said, fighting back tears. 'It has a hold on you, and I think people who haven't been through that don't understand it.'
The couple split in 2015 after Katona accused the former rugby player of assault, and they divorced in 2017. She later obtained a restraining order against him. Kay died from a suspected drug overdose in July 2019 at the age of 39.
Reflecting on the relationship, Katona recalled how her mother feared for her life. 'My mum said she was waiting for the police to knock on the door to say that he had killed me,' she said. The singer also expressed regret over the impact on her children, saying she remembered a look of 'pure weakness' from her daughter Molly.
Katona previously told OK! Magazine that she does not know where Kay is buried and has been denied access to his ashes for their daughter. 'I will never forgive them for that,' she said of his family. 'I think it's cruel – she was his baby and she doesn't deserve to be treated like that.'
