Former Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher has aimed a brutal dig at his wife Liz, leading her to remark "that was a red flag" in a revealing podcast appearance. The couple, who first dated as teenagers, lost contact only to rekindle their romance years later after a chance encounter.
Rekindled Romance After Teenage Years
Kelvin Fletcher and Liz were childhood acquaintances who went their separate ways after their teenage relationship. They unexpectedly reconnected in their twenties when Liz had completed university and Kelvin was based in Leeds for Emmerdale filming. The actor recalls they "bumped into each other" and exchanged numbers, with things progressing from there.
The First Date That Raised Concerns
Liz disclosed the "red flag" moment during a 2023 appearance on the Ameliarate Through Wine podcast, prompted by Kelvin's harsh comment about their romantic dynamic. When asked if they were a romantic pair, Kelvin stated: "I'm very romantic and Liz is the least romantic person ever." This led Liz to recall their first adult date in Littleborough, Greater Manchester.
"We went for lunch because I was working in the evening," Liz shared. "So Kelvin picked me up for lunch, there was no wine, because it was a lunchtime thing. I think I ordered some chicken dinner and Kelvin ordered, I'll never forget, a caesar salad, and that was a red flag. I thought, 'Why's he ordering a caesar salad without anchovies?'"
A Romantic Gesture That Lasted Years
Despite the salad controversy, Kelvin proved his romantic nature with a gesture that spanned over a decade. After their first date, he kept the restaurant's business card in his wallet for eleven years. On the night before their wedding at One Mayfair in London, he presented the crumpled card to Liz as her wedding gift.
"On the back I wrote a little message saying, 'I can't wait to marry you tomorrow,'" Kelvin revealed. "And that was her gift. There were no diamonds, nothing like that, I'd spent enough on the wedding already."
From Acting to Farming Life
Kelvin and Liz are now proud parents to four children and have taken a dramatic career shift. The actor has stepped back from acting to focus on the family's 120-acre farm in the idyllic village of Wincle in Cheshire, which they purchased during the Covid pandemic.
The couple have documented their farming journey through television programmes Kelvin's Big Farming Adventure and Fletchers' Family Farm on ITV One. Recently, Kelvin shared an unexpected moment when his cow Ruby gave birth on the farm.
Farm Drama With Newborn Calf
In last week's episode of Fletcher's Family Farm, Kelvin revealed: "So a nice surprise this morning, saw Ruby on top of the field with something hanging out the backside, and I was a little bit alarmed at first. As I got closer, I realised it was kind of just the afterbirth, and she's calm this morning."
Kelvin described discovering Ruby had "wandered off and left" the newborn calf, which concerned him. After coaxing the cow back, she began licking the calf dry. "It's a heifer calf. Our first heifer calf," he announced proudly.
However, the situation turned concerning when Kelvin observed Ruby kicking the calf. He relocated both animals to the barn hoping they would bond, but discovered Ruby persistently rejecting the calf with her hooves whenever it tried to nurse. Determined, Kelvin declared: "I will not be defeated."
The couple's journey from teenage sweethearts to married farmers with four children continues to captivate audiences, blending personal revelations with their new agricultural adventures in the Peak District countryside.
