Kelly Clarkson mortified after 'Pretty Woman' moment in Brooklyn store
Kelly Clarkson mortified by 'Pretty Woman' moment in Brooklyn shop

Kelly Clarkson has been left enraged after a shopping trip in Brooklyn, where she claims a sales assistant treated her poorly. The 44-year-old singer and The Voice coach was having retail therapy in an upmarket clothes shop when she says she was humiliated after being 'looked at like she couldn't afford it'.

Singer likens experience to iconic film scene

Taking to social media, Clarkson said she simply wanted to try on some items in the store because it looked "rad", but was subsequently left red-faced. She compared the experience to that of Julia Roberts' character, Vivian, in the iconic film Pretty Woman, who is told to leave a posh frock shop while wearing her stripper boots.

Recalling the awkward moment, Clarkson wrote: "Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy and literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me."

Clarkson's warning to fans

She continued: "Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale," before naming the store. She then told her fans to visit the store "if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman", adding, "For sure, check it out".

In the 1990 romcom, Vivian, a sex worker played by Julia Roberts, falls in love with Richard Gere's Edward but is left embarrassed when an uptight shop assistant tells her she can't afford to try on clothes on Rodeo Drive. However, when Vivian returns dressed in finery and laden with shopping bags, she tells the same assistant: "Big mistake. Huge!"

Fans show support

After sharing her post, Clarkson's fans flocked to the comments section to support her, with one posting a snap of herself holding up a poster that read: "Kelly Clarkson army rise up!"

Clarkson, who shot to fame on American Idol, is known for speaking her mind. In July, during her Las Vegas residency, she compared herself to Taylor Swift while addressing the crowd at the 4,174-seat Colosseum Theatre inside Caesar's Palace.
