Donald Trump's granddaughter Kai Trump showed a telling reaction when the President was jeered by basketball fans at Madison Square Garden, offering a glimpse into their close relationship. Mr Trump, a self-proclaimed long-time New York Knicks supporter, attended the team's first home NBA Finals match in 27 years on Monday evening, but did not receive a warm welcome.
Jeers During the National Anthem
Audible boos rang out when the President appeared on the Jumbotron alongside Kai Trump during the National Anthem. The 19-year-old professional golfer, daughter of Donald Trump Jr and his former wife Vanessa, is the President's eldest grandchild. Her response to the jeers revealed much about her bond with her grandfather.
Kai's Unbothered Demeanor
In footage of the incident, Kai stood behind Mr Trump, appearing completely unbothered by the boos. She even seemed to begin smiling faintly as her grandfather saluted the anthem, according to reports from Mirror US. This composure reflects her earlier remarks about the challenges of her family name.
Kai gained prominence after a speech supporting her grandfather's re-election at the 2024 Republican Convention. She has previously discussed how her connection to the President has impacted her life. In a social media clip, she said: "Fifty per cent of the world doesn't like me because of my last name." She added: "One time I was out in public and someone literally walked up to me to tell me that my grandpa sucks. I'm like, 'well, thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to say that'. Like, great, what do you want me to say to that?"
Security Measures at the Arena
Mr Trump's presence meant additional obstacles for Knicks fans attending the game. Secret Service personnel conducted TSA-style security screenings at the venue, and a substantial security barrier was erected around Madison Square Garden. Traffic routes were shut to vehicles and pedestrians within a 10-block radius of the arena from approximately four-and-a-half hours before tip-off.
Mr Trump is the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals match. Earlier in the series, he praised the Knicks' playoff campaign and owner James Dolan. "Well, I've been a Knicks fan for a long time, and I'm also a Jim Dolan fan," Trump said last week. "He's a nice guy, okay? He's been a long time wanting to win, and he's a competitive guy, and he's got a team that's amazing."
Game Outcome
The San Antonio Spurs ended the Knicks' winning streak, claiming game three of the NBA Finals 115-111 to reduce the series deficit to 2-1. The Knicks had won 13 consecutive playoff games, but the Spurs secured a narrow victory. After dropping the first two home games, the Spurs led 33-22 in the first quarter, but the Knicks stormed back with 42 points in the second quarter to take a seven-point lead. The Spurs regained a one-point lead in the third quarter and held on through the final period.
Victor Wembanyama starred for the Spurs with 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while Stephon Castle added 23 points. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 32 points. Game four will be played in New York on Wednesday, with game five back in San Antonio on Saturday.
