John Terry has taken aim at Chelsea after being overlooked for the interim manager position following Liam Rosenior's dismissal. The former Chelsea captain, speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored, claimed no one in the club's academy or first-team setup was more qualified than him for the short-term role.
Terry's Reaction to Being Overlooked
Responding to Morgan's assertion that the snub was 'borderline offensive', Terry said: 'Now Piers, you're 100% spot on. I've never thought that I could be Chelsea manager. But when a manager leaves the football club and Chelsea are looking for an interim manager, there was no one in the building, the academy building or the first team building, that was more qualified than me in terms of their qualifications.'
Terry emphasized his deep connection to the club, stating: 'More importantly, and above all of that, whether it was for one game or two games, there was no one more Chelsea than me. And again, touching on the supporters, giving the supporters what they wanted at that time.'
Context of the Interim Manager Appointment
Chelsea sacked Rosenior after just three-and-a-half months in charge during the 2025/26 season. The club appointed under-18s coach Calum McFarlane as interim manager for the second time that campaign, after he had previously covered for two fixtures following Enzo Maresca's departure. McFarlane went on to oversee six matches, including an FA Cup final.
Terry, who has only served as assistant coach at Aston Villa and a part-time mentor in Chelsea's academy, lamented the lack of opportunities to advance his coaching career. He ruled himself out of the permanent role, saying: 'Did I think that I deserve the Chelsea manager job long-term? Absolutely not. Because Chelsea is way bigger than me. If I want to go into that, I need to go on my journey to then get the Chelsea job.'
Future at Chelsea and Squad Changes
Despite Terry's comments, Chelsea have already secured Xabi Alonso as their permanent head coach on a four-year deal starting July 1. The club faces major transfer decisions, with Enzo Fernandez's future uncertain amid interest from Real Madrid, and Trevoh Chalobah linked with a move to Como. Chelsea will not compete in Europe next season but are expected to target reinforcements, including Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers, though he appears more likely to join Arsenal.
