Jimmy Cricket, the Northern Irish comedian who died at the age of 80 on Monday (3 August), is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, May, and their four children: Dale, Jamie, Katie, and Frankie.
Family's statement
The family released a devastating statement announcing his death, which read: "Our beloved Jimmy has passed away this morning after a short illness. He spent his last few days surrounded by his family, love, laughter, and songs.
"Jimmy brought so much laughter and happiness to countless audiences in his career over the years. Whether on stage, screen, or radio, or if you met him in person as well. But that was nothing to the happiness he gave to his family.
"A devoted husband to May for fifty-two years. A wonderful dad to his four children and very silly grandad indeed to his four grandchildren. He was our greatest champion and loved us all loudly. He also just loved people, and he absolutely loved being a stand-up comedian. What a life he lived."
How they met
Married to his wife for over 50 years, Jimmy often spoke of his life with May, a professional singer. In a 2018 interview with Lancashire Evening News, the Northern Irish star revealed: "I first met my wife May in 1972, when she arrived at Pontins holiday camp in Morecambe with her two sisters, Margaret and Evelyn.
"They were working as waitresses at the camp. I was a Bluecoat host/entertainer. May and Margaret used to get up and sing in the bar after their restaurant duties. With their lovely voices and natural harmonies, they were a hit with both the holidaymakers and the staff."
Wedding and family life
Just two years later, Jimmy and May tied the knot in Bury. The couple said "I do" in a Catholic Church on Peter Street before heading to the Royal Hotel on Silver Street for their reception.
While little is known about their family life, Jimmy often shared updates on his Facebook page and official website. In October 2024, he noted that he and May had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by heading to Penvale Lake Lodges in Llangollen, North Wales. They were joined by their four children and their grandchildren.
