Jessica Bouzas, the Spanish tennis star ranked 52nd in the world, was reprimanded by the umpire after her black undershirt became slightly visible on her lower back during her Wimbledon first-round match. The incident occurred after Bouzas defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 6-3 on Court 17, but the official noticed the dress code infraction as the crowd began to clear.
Umpire's Warning After Match
Bouzas stood on the court looking up at the umpire in her chair, who warned her about the black undershirt appearing on her lower back. The world No. 52, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year, explained the discussion afterwards. "A problem here is that they are very strict with many things," Bouzas told Movistar Plus Deportes. "I think it was a bit of black here, and you can't do that, so I will have to sort it out. But yes, they are very strict with things like this, so now I'll see how I can fix it."
Strict All-White Dress Code
Wimbledon's dress code guidelines state: "Competitors must be dressed in suitable tennis attire that is almost entirely white* and this applies from the point at which the player enters the court surround." The rules specify that white does not include off-white or cream, and there should be no solid mass or panel of colouring. A single trim of colour around the neckline and cuff of sleeves is acceptable but must be no wider than one centimetre (10mm). Colour within patterns is measured as a solid mass and must also be within the 10mm guide. Logos formed by variations of material or patterns are not acceptable.
Next Round Opponent
Bouzas set up a second-round showdown with Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska. The strict enforcement of the dress code underscores Wimbledon's long-standing tradition of requiring players to wear predominantly white attire.
