Jeremy Clarkson has temporarily closed the butcher's counter at his Oxfordshire pub, The Farmer's Dog, as the UK braces for its hottest June day on record with temperatures forecast to exceed 35C. The former Top Gear presenter took to Instagram to announce the closure, citing challenges posed by extreme heat.
Heatwave Forces School Closures
On Tuesday, June 23, it emerged that no fewer than 312 schools throughout England and Wales are shutting their doors, either completely or partially, owing to the blistering heat. Britain is preparing for its most sweltering June day ever recorded, with the mercury predicted to climb beyond 35C. The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for extreme heat across the South East, directly impacting the 66-year-old presenter's farm in Chipping Norton.
Clarkson's Instagram Update
Accompanied by a photograph of his treasured pub, The Farmer's Dog, featuring a hot weather advisory notice displayed outside, Clarkson posted a detailed statement. It read: "It turns out that when Britain reaches temperatures normally associated with southern Spain, certain things stop working properly. As a result, Chops, (our butcher's counter) will be closed today and potentially for the remainder of the week. The combination of extreme heat, refrigeration units and a giant tent has proved challenging."
He added: "We're working on solutions and will reopen as soon as it's sensible to do so. Don't worry, our famous sausage rolls will still be available from the garden bars and pub bar. Diddly Squat Farm Shop and Hops will remain open, although you may notice we've moved a few tills around to make life slightly more bearable for our team."
Dog Restriction for Safety
The TV host then implemented a temporary restriction for some of his most cherished patrons, emphasising it was for their wellbeing. Clarkson continued: "And finally, a word on dogs. We love them. The clue is in the name. Normally, they're always welcome. But with very little shade on site and temperatures nudging towards 35 degrees and beyond, today might be a good day for them to stay somewhere cool and comfortable instead. Thank you for understanding."
Public Reaction
Supporters rushed to the comments section to voice their worries online. One person wrote: "Heat is a terrible thing to deal with. I try to get all my work done in the winter." Another concurred: "Get a refrigerated trailer. They are built for the heat. Perfect temp solution or even permanent." Meanwhile, others applauded the entrepreneur for his straightforward message and prioritising his customers. One enthused: "I love this - so sensible. Why would any dog owner need these basic instructions, but some do. Well done, you guys." Another concurred: "I think that might be one of the nicest ways I've read this before, to remind customers about the safety and care of their pups."
