Emmerdale actors Jeff Hordley and Zoe Henry have been a beloved real-life couple since meeting at drama school over two decades ago. Married since 2003, the pair have weathered heartbreak, including the loss of their dog Rita in 2024, and Jeff's ongoing battle with Crohn's disease.
Meeting and Proposal
Jeff and Zoe first met at drama school, and their romance quickly blossomed. In 2002, Jeff proposed to Zoe right after she won the Best Actress in a Leading Role award at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards. Jeff recalled: "I had been planning to propose for some time and thought to myself: 'If she wins today, I'll do it today'. When she won, I leaped out of my seat in front of her. Then it dawned on me that her winning meant that I had to propose - and that's when the nerves set in. Fortunately for me, she said yes."
Wedding and Family
The couple married in 2003 at Hedingham Castle, with a reception at the Swan Hotel in Lavenham. Guests included Emmerdale co-stars Emma Atkins (Charity Tate) and Charley Webb (Debbie Dingle). They have two children: daughter Violet, born in 2005, and son Stan, born in 2008. The family lives in the Yorkshire Dales.
Heartbreaking Pet Loss
In 2024, the family suffered the loss of their beloved dog Rita. Appearing on Lorraine, Zoe said: "We lost our dear old doggy Rita back in February, which was truly awful. It feels not the right time, but it's never going to be the right time." She added that they were getting a new puppy named Geraldine.
Jeff's Crohn's Disease Diagnosis
Jeff was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at age 18, after six years of symptoms including stomach cramps and diarrhea. He told Express.co.uk in 2009: "Even though I tried to avoid foods that upset my digestive system, such as coffee and Chinese takeaways, I was still sick and tired, and I kept losing weight." The condition forced him to drop out of his final year plays at drama school.
In 2019, Zoe opened up on Loose Women about how the diagnosis changed their lives: "He was diagnosed when he was about 18, so he was 23 when I met him, and it's sort of changed our lives." She credited their allotment with helping Jeff manage his health, saying: "There's a lot to be said about mental health and having your hands in the soil... For Jeff, it's the health benefits of eating what we've grown."
