A professional lip reader has identified FIFA president Gianni Infantino's baffled four-word question to US President Donald Trump after he appeared to refuse to vacate the stage at the World Cup final. Spain had just defeated Argentina to claim their second world title.
Trump Lingers During Trophy Presentation
Following some extraordinary scenes, in which several Argentina players appeared to lash out at their opponents, the trophy presentation took place. Trump and Infantino jointly handed Spain's captain Rodri the trophy for the momentous occasion, but things quickly became uncomfortable. Just as he had done at last year's Club World Cup, Trump apparently declined to leave the stage for the actual lift.
Lip reader Jeremy Freeman revealed he had picked up on what Trump said to Spain's captain Rodri, as well as what Infantino whispered to Trump as the peculiar scenes unfolded. Mr Freeman told Reach that, as he handed Spain's skipper the trophy, he said: "Very good, well done, well done."
Infantino's Whispered Question
Trump then lingered awkwardly at the side of the stage, despite it being apparent he was supposed to have stepped away. Infantino hurried over and, according to Jeremy, leaned into the President's ear and said: "Ha ha ha ha, you stay with them?!"
Mr Freeman's observations regarding what Infantino and Trump said to one another and Spain's players come as the pair faced considerable criticism for their proximity to the celebrations. A comparable controversy arose last year when Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup, in the same stadium, and Trump similarly proved reluctant to depart the celebration stage.
Political Controversy Surrounding Trump and US Team
Beyond the drama on the pitch, which included a red card for Argentina's Enzo Fernandez in the 93rd minute, the tournament has been punctuated by political controversy involving Trump and the USA's own national side. Trump ignited a global scandal when he appeared to admit to pressuring FIFA chief Infantino to overturn the red card shown to American player Folarin Balogun ahead of their match against Belgium, a game they would go on to lose.
Following the decision being reversed, Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social, writing: "Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice."
Jeers and Snubs at the Final
The controversy and protests showed little sign of abating at the final, with footage circulating on X showing Trump being met with loud jeers ahead of kick-off. Further scenes emerged after the final whistle, with one Argentine player appearing to stage his own act of defiance. Video footage from the post-match medal ceremony seemingly captured Argentinian defender Cristian Romero, who had been substituted during the tense encounter, deliberately snubbing Trump by refusing to shake his hand. Romero was clearly visible greeting both Infantino and Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum, who were positioned on either side of Trump, while appearing to blank the US leader entirely.
