Vita Molyneux visited Brockwell Lido, one of London's lowest-rated outdoor pools, during a heatwave that pushed temperatures past 35°C. Despite harsh reviews and chaotic booking systems, she found the pool itself delightful.
Heatwave desperation leads to a lido visit
The UK heatwave had Molyneux, a New Zealander who thought she could handle the heat, desperate to cool off. Living just a 25-minute bike ride from Brockwell Park, she decided to finally visit the lido after two years in the area.
Unknown to her, the operator Fusion Lifestyle had entered administration on April 1, 2026, with Active Lambeth set to take over from July 1. The booking system had collapsed, making online reservations impossible.
Alarming online reviews
After failing to book by phone or online, Molyneux discovered a string of negative TripAdvisor reviews describing the lido as 'absolutely grim,' with filthy changing rooms, flies, and broken facilities. The lido holds a 2.9 out of 5 rating.
Undeterred, she cycled to the park to try securing a spot in person. The receptionist confirmed walk-ins were available, charging £9.50 for entry.
Changing rooms disappoint
Upon entering the changing rooms, Molyneux encountered a pungent sewage smell, wet grimy floors, and hair. The space was cramped, dingy, and stifling; she kept her shoes on while changing.
Pool exceeds expectations
Despite the changing rooms, the pool itself was vast, with lanes for lengths and a generous free-swim area. The water was cool and crystal clear, offering a glorious escape from the heat. Molyneux spent two hours swimming and sunbathing.
Verdict: Worth the grime
Molyneux concluded that while the changing rooms leave much to be desired, the pool is beautiful and spotless. For those willing to tolerate some grubbiness and able to book in person, the lido is worth the journey.
