Hollyoaks Star Stuart Manning's Dramatic Transformation 16 Years Later
Former Hollyoaks heartthrob Stuart Manning appears completely transformed with a thick grey beard and glasses, looking unrecognisable 16 years after departing the popular E4 soap opera. The actor, now 45, portrayed Russell Owen on the show from 2004 to 2009, briefly reprising his role in 2018.
From Soap Heartthrob to New Look
Stuart Manning, who joined Hollyoaks in his mid-twenties and quickly became a poster boy for the series, recently showcased his fresh appearance on Instagram Stories. Sporting a grey beard, glasses, and considerably longer hair, the star contrasts sharply with his clean-shaven, youthful look from his soap days.
During the noughties, Manning was romantically linked with Liberty X vocalist Jessica Taylor, adding to his celebrity status. His character Russell Owen was central to major plotlines, including a brief marriage to Mercedes McQueen, a battle with testicular cancer, and a relationship with twin Sophie Burton.
Memorable Storylines and Fan Following
Manning's time on Hollyoaks was marked by dramatic moments, such as saving Sophie from a fire at the Dog In The Pond, only for her to die in his arms shortly after. Reflecting on his frequent shirtless scenes in 2009, he told OK! magazine: "I think that's part and parcel of being in Hollyoaks. If you're a girl coming into the show, you're going to be wearing short skirts and small tops, and for a guy you're going to be in your underwear or shorts or a tight top."
He added: "When I joined the show, I prepared for that and I worked out – especially when I was in the calendar a few years ago. I'm starting to get back into my old shape again!" Manning also acknowledged the considerable female and gay following he attracted, noting it was "always quite nice" during public appearances.
Life After Hollyoaks
After leaving Hollyoaks in 2009 to pursue other ventures, Manning stunned viewers with a brief return in 2018, which proved to be his final appearance. His character Russ met a violent end in a hammer attack after being caught cheating on Mercedes with Goldie McQueen.
Since departing the soap permanently, Manning has maintained an active acting career. His credits include roles in Doctors, The Dumping Ground, and Casualty. He also participated in I'm A Celebrity in 2009 and featured in the American television series Glow and Darkness, alongside stars like Joan Collins, Jane Seymour, and Denise Richards.
Personal Life and Current Endeavours
Beyond the entertainment industry, Stuart Manning enjoys a happy marriage with his wife Georgina, and the couple share two children. His transformation highlights a shift from his soap opera heartthrob image to a more mature appearance, while he continues to balance family life with occasional acting roles.
Hollyoaks continues to air Monday to Wednesday on E4 at 7pm, but for fans, Manning's legacy as Russell Owen remains a memorable part of the show's history.
