Hollyoaks Legend Cindy Cunningham Returning After Axing Reversal
Hollyoaks Legend Cindy Cunningham Returning After Axing

Hollyoaks is set to welcome back one of its most iconic characters, Cindy Cunningham, played by Stephanie Waring, after a controversial axing during Channel 4's downsizing of the soap. The actress has been spotted on set, confirming her full-time return to the Chester-based drama.

Background of the Axing

Channel 4 reduced Hollyoaks from five half-hour episodes per week to just three 20-minute instalments, leading to 130 staff redundancies, including 20 cast members. Among those let go were James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) and Cindy Cunningham, whose exits sparked outrage among fans. James was initially killed off in a car bombing but later returned, first as a guest and then full-time after Finnegan's teaching commitments ended.

Cindy's Comeback

Metro previously revealed Stephanie Waring's return as a full-time character. A source said: 'Steph leaving was easily the biggest shock of the cast cuts, after all, she has been there since day one. Fans have long hoped that she would one day be back. The cast and crew are thrilled to have her back in the fold and fans will be equally excited – Cindy will always be at the centre of Hollyoaks and that won’t change when she comes back. There’s a lot planned!'

Waring's Emotional Response

Waring was open about her pain following the axing. On Instagram, she wrote: 'I can’t believe I am writing this and I have taken the last two weeks to process and come to terms with the shock of what I am about to say. I am heartbroken to announce that my character of Cindy has been included in the actors reduction of Hollyoaks.' She added that she was offered the chance to say she quit but refused to lie to fans who have followed Cindy's journey for nearly three decades. 'Hollyoaks is in my blood and I have loved every minute of walking in Cindy’s heels,' she said.

On her last day of filming, she posted: 'Today I had to say goodbye to some crew members I have been working with for the last 16 years. And known for the last 28 years. And it just hit me like a thunderbolt. I’m really going to miss these people.'

Impact and Fan Reaction

The returns of both James and Cindy have been welcomed by fans, who had campaigned for their reinstatement. Cindy's comeback is expected to place her back at the heart of the show, with storylines already in development. The downsizing had been a brutal period for the soap, but the reversal signals a positive turn for Hollyoaks as it adapts to its new format.
