Temperatures pushing 40°C turned Hellfest, the legendary French rock and metal festival, into a literal furnace this year. Nestled in the historic town of Clisson—a place rich in folklore and ghost stories—the event delivered an apocalyptic yet captivating atmosphere that left festival-goers both awed and drained.
A Festival Like No Other
From the moment visitors enter the site, it is clear that Hellfest is unlike any other music festival. The VIP area resembles a dark fantasy landscape, complete with towering skulls, eerie water features and gothic sculptures. A giant skull emerges from a pond scattered with lily pads, while a crimson fountain draws curious crowds beneath the gaze of mysterious cloaked figures positioned high above.
Even the bars are works of art, designed with skeletal architecture that makes grabbing a drink feel like stepping into the underworld itself. What sets Hellfest apart is its commitment to spectacle. Beyond the music, the festival doubles as an open-air art gallery, with enormous metal installations dominating the horizon. Many of these creations remain on display throughout the year, allowing visitors to explore the grounds long after the final guitar riff has faded.
Record Heat and Massive Crowds
Yet it is during the festival weekend that the site truly comes alive, welcoming more than 60,000 dedicated fans of rock and metal. This year's event featured more than 170 acts spread across multiple stages. Headliners included Iron Maiden, Bring Me The Horizon, Limp Bizkit and The Offspring, while countless other artists kept crowds entertained throughout the weekend. The Pretty Reckless were among those embracing the festival's darker aesthetic, with frontwoman Taylor Momsen delivering a powerful performance that echoed across the packed arena.
Ozzy Osbourne Honoured with Permanent Tribute
One of the most talked-about moments of the festival came before fans even reached the stages. Hellfest unveiled a striking 20-foot tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, positioned prominently at the entrance to the site. Created by acclaimed French sculptor Philippe Pasqua, the monument now stands as a permanent tribute to one of heavy metal's most influential figures. Sharon Osbourne had originally been scheduled to attend a ceremony marking the unveiling, but was unable to travel after an unexpected hospital stay. She later expressed her gratitude to the festival online, sharing photographs of the impressive sculpture with followers. Ozzy joins a select group of rock legends honoured at Hellfest; in 2022, organisers revealed a replacement statue of Motörhead icon Lemmy Kilmister after the previous memorial had fallen into disrepair.
A Weekend of Mythic Proportions
As the blazing sun beat down on Clisson, Hellfest once again proved why it has become one of Europe's most celebrated music festivals. Equal parts concert, art installation and immersive theatre, it offers visitors a chance to experience a world where heavy metal culture is elevated to something approaching mythology.
