Helen Skelton, the 43-year-old BBC presenter known for Blue Peter, Morning Live, Countryfile, and Channel 5's Life on the Farm, once suffered a major wardrobe mishap in front of former Prime Minister David Cameron. The incident occurred in 2012 while she was hosting the victory parade at the Olympics, co-presenting the main stage celebrations outside Buckingham Palace in London.
The Embarrassing Moment
While on stage with Olympic athletes Chris Hoy and Sarah Storey, a gust of wind blew up Skelton's dress, revealing her underwear to the crowd. She recalled the blunder during a 2017 interview with the Daily Express, calling it the most embarrassing moment of her career. "Flashing my knickers to the nation during the Olympics Parade in 2012. My skirt blew up and I was wearing grey granny knickers. I didn't even know it had happened when everyone cheered. It was former Prime Minister David Cameron who told me I had flashed," she said.
Misinterpreted Cheers
In a January interview with The Guardian, Skelton elaborated: "After the 2012 Olympics I hosted the parade. I had on a little skirt and when the prime minister came on everyone cheered. I thought, 'Oh my God, they love David Cameron,' but they were cheering because my skirt had blown up, and I'd flashed my knickers at him." Even nine years later, she said it remained her most embarrassing moment.
Career Flourishes
Despite the mishap, Skelton's career has continued to flourish. She later appeared on Strictly Come Dancing and now hosts Lost and Found in the Lakes on BBC One. The series, which follows a team of metal detectorists, scuba divers, and freedivers searching the Lake District, has been confirmed for a third series with an extended 20-episode run set to air in 2027. Skelton said: "I'm delighted to be returning to the Lakes for another series. What makes this programme so special is the combination of incredible searches and the personal stories behind every lost item. It's always a privilege to help reunite people with belongings they never thought they'd see again, and I can't wait to get back out with the team for more adventures."
