Harry Redknapp has revealed that his wife Sandra is now "all good" and "keeping busy" after her life-threatening sepsis ordeal in 2018. The former football manager, 79, spoke exclusively at Shoreditch's Ruffians Barber Shop for World Cuts, a football-themed event by Viagogo and Ruffian.
Sandra's sepsis battle
In 2018, Sandra was rushed to hospital after falling ill while Harry was away on business. Tests revealed she had sepsis, a severe and potentially fatal response to an infection. According to The UK Sepsis Trust, sepsis affects around 245,000 people in the UK annually and causes roughly 48,000 deaths. The NHS warns that sepsis can progress rapidly and requires immediate treatment.
Harry credited his family for acting quickly: "I was in London at the time, I was managing, so I wasn't coming home that night and my family rushed her up to the hospital and it's lucky [they] did otherwise, if she hadn't have gone in that night, it could've been too late, that's how dangerous it is."
Raising sepsis awareness
Harry has since got involved with a sepsis charity to raise awareness. He said: "It's quite a scary illness, more people died with sepsis last year than three other major cancers, you'd never believe it. It's scary. We didn't really know what she had, it's only when we rushed her to the hospital and she was getting very ill."
The NHS lists common sepsis symptoms in adults as confusion or slurred speech, uncontrollable shivering, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, blue/pale/grey/blotchy skin, high or low temperature, and not peeing all day. It urges seeking medical help if symptoms appear.
Harry's own health update
Harry also shared an update on his hearing loss diagnosis. He admitted he often forgets to wear his hearing aids but insisted all is well. He said: "I didn't even think I had a problem until I went for a hearing test and then they said, 'Oh you're way down', so that's why I got them really."
The former I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! contestant previously called his hearing troubles "dangerous", citing incidents like leaving his indicators flashing while driving. Speaking on This Morning with Sandra, he said: "It could've caused accidents."
