Harry and Meghan’s UK return exposes relationship shift, says author

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's reported return to the UK has been described as revealing a major shift in their relationship, with royal author Andrew Lownie claiming the move suggests the balance of power between the couple may be changing.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly preparing to return to Britain for an extended period after six years of building a new life in California. The couple are said to have secured a private home and made arrangements for their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to attend school in Britain.

Reported relocation details

The reported move comes shortly after Prince Harry brought Meghan and their children to Britain for a reunion with King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House. The Sussexes are also understood to have informed the King of their plans.

The return would also appear to be a compromise rather than a complete break from their American life. Reports say the Sussexes intend to retain their Montecito mansion and holiday property in Portugal, meaning their British move would not necessarily signal the end of their life in the US.

Author's comments on relationship dynamics

Royal author Andrew Lownie suggested the decision had been in the works for some time and claimed Prince Harry had been homesick. More significantly, Lownie said the move could indicate a change in the dynamic between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

“The move suggests the balance of power is changing, as she has adapted to him,” Lownie said.

The comments follow previous claims from Lownie that Prince Harry and Meghan's marriage was under strain. However, those claims remain speculation and neither the Duke nor Duchess has publicly suggested that their relationship is in difficulty.

Education and family plans

The potential relocation has also prompted speculation over where Archie and Lilibet could be educated. One school reportedly being considered is Beaudesert Park School in Gloucestershire, while the wider Cotswolds area has emerged as a possible location for the family's new home.

The move could also give Prince Harry greater opportunity to rebuild his relationship with his father. The Duke has previously spoken about wanting to reconcile with King Charles, particularly following the monarch's cancer diagnosis. In a BBC interview in 2025, Prince Harry said: “I don't know how much longer my father has”.

Future roles and status

Despite the reported return, there are currently no plans for Prince Harry and Meghan to resume their former roles as working royals or receive money from the public purse. Their status is expected to remain that of private, non-working members of the Royal Family.

Prince Harry is expected to continue his work with British charities including WellChild and Scotty's Little Soldiers, as well as his involvement with the Invictus Games. Meghan is expected to continue running her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from Britain.
