Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are "crawling" back to Buckingham Palace because they've "run out of ideas", according to a royal expert. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to travel with their children to the UK in July to mark the one-year countdown to next year's Invictus Games in Birmingham.
Royal Expert: 'Desperation and Failure'
While it is not yet known if King Charles will meet his youngest grandchildren during their stay, a royal expert says the family's return to Britain can be summarised in two words - "desperation and failure". Tom Sykes told The Royalist podcast: "They've run out of ideas, and their finances are basically in jeopardy. And Meghan is someone who is desperate for fame. She's desperate for recognition. She is desperate for money, of course, and status. And it just seems to her that a visit to the Royal Family in Britain would restore to her the credibility she once had."
Harry's Motivation: Isolation and Reconciliation
Mr Bower added that Harry's motivation more likely lay in his "isolation" in the US and hopes of reconciliation with his UK-based relatives. "He misses his roots, he misses England, and somehow wants to worm his way back into the affections not only of his own family, but of the British people," he said.
Children's First Meeting with King Charles in Four Years
Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, last saw the King in person during Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. Harry previously said he wants to bring his children from the US, but had insisted it was too dangerous amid his legal fight over his UK security. The duke has reportedly been assured that adequate security provision will be in place for the trip this summer.
Security and Reconciliation Hopes
When Harry lost a Court of Appeal challenge against the Home Office over his UK security arrangements in 2025, he gave a BBC interview in which he expressed hopes of a reconciliation with his family and revealed that Charles wouldn't speak to him because of the court battle. He said at the time that he "can't see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK". The King's youngest son has levelled a number of accusations at the King, the Queen, his brother and his sister-in-law since stepping back from his role as senior working royal in 2020. These have included claims that Charles was jealous of Meghan and Kate and that William physically attacked him and pushed him into a dog bowl.
