In a deeply emotional revelation, Si King has confirmed that the beloved television duo, the Hairy Bikers, has come to a definitive end following the death of his best friend and co-star, Dave Myers.
A Partnership That Captured Hearts
The pair, united by a shared passion for food and motorbikes, became one of Britain's most cherished on-screen partnerships. They fronted numerous hit cooking shows, including The Hairy Bikers' Cookbook and The Hairy Dieters, creating more than 30 series together for the BBC. Their unique chemistry and camaraderie won them a legion of devoted fans.
This incredible chapter closed in February 2024, when Dave Myers died at home at the age of 66, following a two-year battle with cancer. His wife, family, and Si King were by his side.
'It's Done': The Final Curtain Call
Speaking candidly to Radio Times, Si King laid any speculation about the duo's future to rest. "It's done. That's it," he stated. "The Bikers were plural. There's no Hairy Bikers without my mate."
He reflected on their profound, brotherly bond, describing how they drove each other mad but "absolutely adored each other." King emphasised that no one could ever replace Dave, sharing a poignant memory: "I don't want to look in the rear-view mirror of my motorcycle and see anyone else there. It's Dave, you know?"
He added a heartfelt note on enduring grief: "He doesn't stop being your best mate just because he's passed away. That's never going to go."
Moving Forward With Cherished Memories
While honouring the past, Si King is now embarking on his first major solo television project since his friend's passing. The new Channel 4 series, Britain's Favourite Railway Stations with Si King, will see the avid railway enthusiast meeting staff and exploring the engineering marvels of the UK's vast network of over 2,600 stations.
He described the ongoing support from fans as "incredibly humbling" and shared his philosophy for navigating loss: "You have to move forward, but the only way you can do that is by cherishing the memories."
Following Dave's death, Si King posted a powerful online tribute, writing: "My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can't follow. I will miss him every day... See you on the other side. Love ya." His words captured the profound loss felt by all who knew the iconic TV chef.
