Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed that she significantly reduced her film work after realising she does not love acting as much as she thought. The Oscar-winning actress, 48, said the intense public scrutiny and a difficult working relationship with Harvey Weinstein contributed to her disillusionment with the profession.
Paltrow's only major screen roles in the past five years have been as Pepper Potts in three Marvel films. Her last lead role in a feature film was opposite Johnny Depp in 2015's Mortdecai. She has since appeared in Netflix series The Politician and The Goop Lab, as well as a tourism advert for Dubai.
Reflecting on her career, Paltrow told US radio station Sirius XM that winning an Oscar at age 26 for Shakespeare in Love left her questioning her direction. 'Part of the shine of acting wore off from being in such intense public scrutiny, being a kid who's living every break-up on every headline, being criticised for everything you do, say and wear,' she said.
She also cited the transient nature of filmmaking as a deterrent. 'I'm such a homebody. I like to be with my old friends and cook and squeeze my kids. I don't want to be alone in a hotel room in Budapest for six weeks,' she added.
Paltrow made several films for Weinstein's company Miramax, including Shakespeare in Love and The Talented Mr Ripley. In 2017, she alleged that Weinstein sexually harassed her in a hotel room, an incident she said she reported to then-boyfriend Brad Pitt. Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for rape and sexual assault.
