G'wed stars Dylan Thomas-Smith and Philip S McGuinness have opened up about the life-changing impact of the hit ITVX comedy series. In an exclusive interview with the ECHO, the actors reflected on the show's journey from a sleeper hit to one of the most-watched programs on the platform across three seasons.
Dylan Thomas-Smith on the Show's Growth
Dylan Thomas-Smith, who plays mischievous ringleader Reece Duffy, expressed his pride in the show's organic growth through word of mouth. "It's been life-changing. Everyone on there is family now, and I mean that. I'm so proud of everybody," he said. The 21-year-old actor highlighted the BAFTA nomination as a milestone, noting that the crew also attended the ceremony. "They work 10 times harder than what we do, so hats off to them." Thomas-Smith won Best Breakthrough Performance in a Comedy Series at the Edinburgh TV Awards and was nominated for Best Male Performance in a Comedy at the BAFTA TV Awards. However, he values the show's connection with viewers most. "I've had messages from people's mums, saying it's good that I've spoken to my son about this. I'd have never thought to have done it otherwise," he added.
Street Recognition and Humor
The show's bawdy humor has drawn comparisons to The Inbetweeners, and Thomas-Smith admitted he often hears lines shouted at him on the street. "I get all kinds," he laughed. Despite the attention, he sees it as a positive sign. "It shows people love the show, people care, and people half look up to you as well."
Philip S McGuinness on His Life Change
Philip S McGuinness, who plays Mr. Dunne, shared a humorous anecdote about being recognized during a late-night walk. "I got out of bed at 11pm and went for a little walk. There's a pub over the road and I just heard someone shout, 'Going for a walk at night, are you sir?'" he recalled. The 37-year-old actor, who joined the show at age 35, described it as "one of the best things I have ever done." He also praised the show's positive portrayal of Merseyside. "I feel so proud of my city and everyone in it," he said.
Russell T. Davies Endorsement
The show's growth has been organic, boosted by a endorsement from Russell T. Davies, who called it a "comedy classic." McGuinness met Davies in November, and three months later, Davies posted about the show on Instagram. "He is TV royalty, so for him to do that is just amazing for the show," McGuinness said.
All episodes of G'wed season three are now available to watch on ITVX.
