Singer Guesch Patti Dies at 80 After Long Illness
French singer, dancer, and actress Guesch Patti, born Patricia Porrasse, died in Paris in the early hours of Monday, June 22, 2026, at the age of 80. She had been battling a long illness. Her agent, Sébastien d'Assigny, confirmed the news in a statement to AFP.
“Guesch Patti, dancer, singer, actress, left us in the night of June 21-22, 2026 in Paris, following a long illness. She leaves behind, to all the audiences who were able to see her on stage, the memory of a woman full of life in her artistic expression,” d'Assigny wrote.
Breakthrough Hit Étienne and Controversial Video
Patti rose to fame with her 1987 single Étienne, which sold approximately 1.5 million copies worldwide. The song became a massive hit in France and many European countries, driven partly by its provocative music video. In the video, Patti performed a striptease down to a fishnet body stocking with only two strips of tape covering her nipples, sparking widespread controversy at the time.
Despite the song’s success, Patti later described the fame it brought as a burden. In a 2001 interview with AFP, she said, “I don't want to relive what I experienced with Étienne. I want to protect myself from further media hype. I'm done playing games.” She reiterated this in 2002, telling France 3, “I think there was a kind of pressure that fell on me, which didn't suit my character at all.” She added that she felt hurt that the music industry viewed her “as a product.”
Versatile Career in Music, Dance, and Film
Patti, who described herself as a “chameleon” who liked to “work quietly with all the arts,” continued to release music after Étienne. Her albums included Nomades, Gobe, Blonde, and Dernières nouvelles. She also pursued acting, appearing on stage and screen, including a role in Claude Lelouch’s 1999 film Une pour toutes.
Although she never matched the commercial peak of Étienne, Patti remained a respected figure in French arts. Her talent earned her a Victoire de la musique award, one of France’s highest music honors.
Tributes from Fans and Admirers
Following news of her death, tributes poured in on social media. One fan wrote on Facebook: “She's gone, accompanied by the celebration of music, as if by magic, her greatest hit will live forever!! Hold on tight!! ... Étienne!!!” Another said: “Oh no. I adored her. I have all her albums and, contrary to what you read in the comments, her talent wasn't limited to Étienne.”
A third fan commented: “Thinking of Guesch Patti. A free and influential artist, she left a unique mark on French music with her unforgettable song Étienne. Thank you for the music, for the audacity, and for the artistic energy.” A fourth added: “Guesch Patti, an incredible, free-spirited artist who defined the 80s with her unique style and iconic voice, RIP Mademoiselle.”
Patti’s legacy as a bold, multifaceted performer who challenged conventions with her art remains firmly etched in French pop culture.
