Supermarket own-brand Bourbon biscuits can outperform the branded favourite, with Tesco and Marks and Spencer's offerings tying for first place in a comparative taste test. The 50p packet from Marks and Spencer was among the winners, beating McVitie's, which scored 9/10.
Rankings and Results
The test compared biscuits from Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer against McVitie's. Aldi came last with a 4/10 rating, with the biscuits described as too firm and lacking in flavour, despite being among the largest packets. Sainsbury's followed with 5/10, noted for more cream and a darker colour but a texture that let it down.
Lidl scored 7/10, with a stronger, more classic Bourbon flavour but a slightly dry taste. Asda's biscuits, priced at 70p for 300g, received 8/10 for a crumbly texture and an ideal level of cream.
Winners and Details
McVitie's, at £1.14 for 300g, scored 9/10, praised for a pleasant crunch and a chocolaty, not overpowering, filling. Marks and Spencer's biscuits, at 50p for 165g, earned a perfect 10/10, with a much thicker layer of smooth, soft cream that was chocolatey but not sickly, and a crunch that wasn't too firm. The only downside noted was the smallest packet size.
Tesco, at 63p for 296g, also scored 10/10, with the biscuits described as even better than the brand and the most similar in appearance. They had a sweet, chocolaty filling without too much cream and a perfect texture, ideal for those who prefer a biscuit not overly filled with cream.
