The beloved BBC gardening makeover show Ground Force aired for 12 series between 1997 and 2005, transforming neglected gardens into stunning havens in just two days. Hosted by Alan Titchmarsh, with gardening expert Charlie Dimmock and builder Tommy Walsh, the trio became household names. Since the show ended, all three have continued thriving on television.
Alan Titchmarsh: From Ground Force to Love Your Weekend
Alan Titchmarsh, now 77, left Ground Force in 2001 but remained a TV staple. He presented Songs of Praise, hosted a BBC Radio 2 show, and fronted his own ITV chat show from 2007 to 2014. In 2019, he surprised audiences by singing on All Star Musicals. Currently, he hosts ITV's Love Your Weekend, blending celebrity interviews with lifestyle and gardening.
Married to Alison since 1975, with two daughters, Titchmarsh recently revealed his secret health battle: backache from 60 years of gardening. He told Wise Living Magazine: "I live in a spot which is beautiful and which I hope I've made more beautiful. Beautifying the earth on whatever scale is the most glorious privilege. I get a bit of backache from 60 years of gardening."
Charlie Dimmock: Embracing Comfort and New Roles
Charlie Dimmock, 59, rose to fame on Ground Force and famously never wore a bra on set. She explained to The Independent: "It was always just for comfort. If you're swinging a sledgehammer, you want to be comfortable!" After the show, she presented The Joy of Gardening and Charlie's Garden Army, appeared on CBS, and made a cameo on Hollyoaks in 2002. She also competed on Celebrity MasterChef in 2006 and served as TRIC President from 2003 to 2004.
Dimmock now presents Garden Rescue, competing with the Rich brothers. In 2021, she told World of Cruising: "I haven't seen them recently, but we're still in contact. Occasionally, we chat or bump into each other. Tommy teases me that we're getting old now, which is true, but we have loads of happy memories of filming."
Tommy Walsh: Continuing Building and Media Work
Tommy Walsh, the builder of the trio, has remained active in TV. He has appeared on various home improvement shows and continues to work in construction and media. While less in the spotlight than his co-stars, Walsh has maintained a presence in the industry.
The lasting legacy of Ground Force is evident, as all three cast members have built enduring careers beyond the show's 2005 finale.
