Jaden Smith has claimed that his former friends Kanye West, Drake and Donald Glover no longer associate with him following the release of his debut studio album. The 19-year-old son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith made the comments in an interview with Complex magazine.
Smith, who released his album SYRE: A Beautiful Confusion in November, said he was previously welcomed into their circles as 'Little Homie'. However, he now believes that his chart success has changed their dynamic. 'But now that I'm on the charts next to them, I'm not really Little Homie anymore,' he explained.
The actor and musician said the response from his peers has been less than supportive. 'No, it's more like, 'You can't hang out with us anymore. We didn't know you were making an album this whole time. We thought you were just Little Homie giving us free water and sh*t. You're not really cool with us anymore,'' he told the magazine.
Smith's album SYRE debuted at number 24 on the US Billboard 200 chart and took three years to create. He previously told Vanity Fair that the album was inspired by Kanye West's The Life of Pablo and Frank Ocean's Blonde.
During the interview, Smith also discussed his love of hip-hop and rap music, noting that the genre dominates streaming charts. 'I feel like it's the history that has led us to this domination of music. I wonder all the time. If you look at the top charts of streaming platforms... the top 10 is always rap music,' he said.
