A new book about Ted the dog from Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing will be released following his death in April.
The Patterdale terrier mix appeared on more than 40 episodes of the BBC Two show alongside Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse.
Book details
In Happy Ever After: My Final Journey With Gone Fishing, Ted faces the prospect of retirement. Instead of relaxing, he tries his paw at several different roles including public service, the military and volunteering until he makes a surprising discovery inside his briefcase.
Happy Ever After follows Ted’s first two books: A Pawtobiography and Pup Fiction.
Ted's background and fame
Ted was owned by Gone Fishing producer Lisa Clark, who rescued him from a dogs’ home in Surrey in the spring of 2013 when he was about six months old. Clark is also the author of Happy Ever After.
Ted first appeared in the BBC show during its third series in 2020 and quickly became popular with fans, being given a lifetime achievement award during the show’s 2025 Christmas special. His final appearance will be on the opening episode of the new series as Mortimer and Whitehouse pay tribute to him.
Tributes and release date
After his death, Mortimer said: “So very, very sad. Lovely Ted, the best companion and the greatest little chum. Going to miss him so much… and away boss.”
Whitehouse added: “Bye bye Ted old friend. He wasn’t a dog, he was a species all of his own. He’s gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky. We will really miss you mate.”
Clark said: “Ted was a much-loved family pet as well as a treasured companion to Paul and Bob on Gone Fishing. “He took fame in his little stride and loved nothing better than messing around on the riverbanks, nicking Jammie Dodgers from Bob and bait from Paul. “He will be sorely missed both at home and on screen. We’ll never forget him. He is survived at home by Bo the Briard.”
Happy Ever After: My Final Journey With Gone Fishing will be released on September 24.
